Monitoring observations of spawning approaches of White Sea herring in the Chupa Bay of the White Sea

In the Chupa Bay of the Kandalaksha Bay of the White Sea, from April 11 to 28, specialists from the Northern Branch of the SSC RF "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) conducted annual monitoring observations of spawning approaches of White Sea herring.

A special feature of the current year is the early warm spring. For a long time, temperatures in the region have been noticeably higher than the climatic norm. As a result, the ice in the bay came off ahead of a multi-year deadline, and work was carried out in open water, whereas control fishing was usually organized at this time under the existing ice cover. Active approaches of herring to spawn were observed: in the coastal zone, eggs were laid on macrophytes in traditional spawning grounds. Marine mammals have also been spotted in the bay, which usually follow shoals of herring.

The selection of material for the assessment of the biological state of herring was carried out during the control scientific fishing. The intensity of herring feeding was low, which is generally typical for spawning fish. During the research period, the predominance of males was noted.

In addition to herring, White Sea cod, polar flounder and rufffish (limanda) were found in small quantities in the catches. In accordance with the research program, along with the collection of ichthyological material, meteorological observations were carried out, data on hydrological conditions were collected, and water samples were taken for hydrochemical analysis.

The materials obtained during the work are planned to be used to evaluate and prepare a forecast of the abundance of aquatic biological resources, substantiate the raw material base and develop measures to regulate fisheries.
