Monitoring of aquatic biological resources in Yakutia

Specialists from the Yakut branch of the SSC RF "All—Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) completed comprehensive field studies within the framework of state monitoring of aquatic biological resources: in September — October 2026, they carried out seasonal work on the Lena, Yana, Indigirka and Kolyma rivers in key fishing areas of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), including Bulunsky, Ust‑Yansky, Allaikhovsky and Nizhnekolymsky.

During the field work, the specialists collected ichthyological material to assess the reserves of aquatic biological resources, as well as hydrobiological samples to clarify the composition and distribution of forage aquatic organisms — zooplankton and zoobenthos. In parallel, the fishing regime was monitored in the areas of extraction of the main commercial fish species.

Studies have revealed a steady trend towards changing the timing of the spawning season of key species. Thus, higher water levels in June and August in the lower reaches of the Yana and Indigirka rivers contributed to the formation of stable hydrological links with isolated lakes, which affected fishing: quotas for chira and whitefish were developed earlier than usual. At the same time, due to the high water level in Indigirka, low development of fishing volumes was observed during the spawning season of the Arctic eagle. In the lower Lena River, the timing of the omul spawning season remained the same compared to 2025, but the spawning delta muksun approached fishing areas much earlier.

Currently, the branch's specialists are conducting desk processing of the collected data. Based on its results, an assessment of the state of the habitat and food supply of fish on the main commercial rivers of Yakutia will be given.
