Monitoring of fishing in the Northern Azov region

The southern branch of the SSC RF "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) is actively expanding fisheries research in the Northern Azov region, a region with significant fishing potential.

Specialists of the Severo-Azovsky Department of the Southern Branch of VNIRO regularly conduct comprehensive studies aimed at a detailed study of the dynamics of fish populations, marine invertebrates and other aquatic organisms in the coastal ecosystems of the Northern Azov region. The main focus of these studies is on the analysis of factors that influence the abundance, distribution and reproduction of these species. In addition, studies are being conducted on the characteristics of the habitat of aquatic biological resources, including hydrological, hydrochemical and hydrobiological parameters.

One of the key activities of the department is monitoring the industrial catch of aquatic biological resources. With the beginning of the spring harvest, the staff of the Severo-Azovsky department began to study the biological indicators of the extracted aquatic biological resources, the qualitative and quantitative structure of their populations, as well as the intensity of fishing activities.

Andrey Monin, Head of the Laboratory of Industrial Fisheries, noted: "Since March 12, we have been monitoring the fishing of the Azov seal, which is caught using fixed seines in the Taganrog Bay, in the area of the Crooked Spit. Within the framework of this monitoring, the size and mass characteristics of catches, their quantitative parameters, as well as by-catch indicators are analyzed. These data will help us develop accurate forecasts of the state of aquatic biological resources and determine the optimal volumes of their extraction."

The scientific activity of the Southern Branch of VNIRO in the Northern Azov region is aimed at the conservation of aquatic biological resources and their rational use, which is of key importance in the implementation of the Strategy for the Sustainable Development of the Azov region until 2040.
