Northern shrimp is a valuable food product. The utilization of quotas for this species in the North Sea of Okhotsk subzone is high, averaging 91% of the total allowable catch over the past two decades.
Specialists from the Magadan branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO), in collaboration with the company Magadanryba, have been monitoring the northern shrimp fishery in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk for many years.
During the winter of 2026, work was conducted on the SRTM "Elladora," equipped with two shrimp trawls, which increased the productivity of the fishery. The research collected data on the biology and fishery statistics of northern shrimp catches. "This year was characterized by favorable ice conditions, but weather conditions (strong winds) reduced the vessel's performance. Nevertheless, the necessary scientific data was collected," commented branch manager Evgeny Metelev.
The data obtained during the monitoring work will be used to prepare forecasts of total allowable catches (TACs) for shrimp in the northern North Okhotsk subzone, as well as to develop recommendations for the rational exploitation of this aquatic biological resource.
