The Ob Delta, a multi—arm flowing formation with extensive shallow areas (salmas), serves as an important feeding area for immature individuals of muksun, nelma, chir, whitefish, and pelyadi. Here, producers of these species recover after spawning.
During the month, the branch's specialists conducted comprehensive studies on their own vessel: they took ichthyological, hydrobiological and hydrochemical samples from 14 control sections of the delta, conducted control catches and sonar surveys to determine the composition, abundance and distribution of the ichthyofauna. The scientists assessed the size and weight characteristics and physiological condition of the caught fish; the age of the individuals will be determined during further in‑house processing.
Such observations on the salmas are of key fisheries importance.: They allow us to estimate the number of juveniles of valuable whitefish during one of the most important periods of its life cycle — and to understand how many fish successfully survive, develop and replenish the commercial stock in the future. The recording of these data is the most important stage in assessing the effectiveness of all work on the restoration of the Ob whitefish.
