Monitoring work in the Funnel of the White Sea

In March of this year, specialists from the Northern Branch of the SSC RF "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) conducted annual resource studies of winter-spawning commercial fish species in the Funnel of the White Sea of the Shoina River (Kanin Peninsula, Nenets Autonomous Okrug).

The navaga fishery in the period 2025-2026 began at the end of December 2025 due to the late formation of stable ice cover in the fishing areas. The main approaches of the navaga have been recorded since the second half of February this year, the by-catch of polar flounder and smelt was insignificant, no more than 1% of the catch of the navaga.

During the field work in March, the catch was dominated by navaga. Isolated specimens of polar flounder and Asian smelt were found in the by-catch. The catches mainly included mature fish with a length of 25-30 cm, juveniles made up no more than 4%.

During the expedition, a trip was made to the Podley River, where biological and genetic samples of European grayling were collected.

The collected material will be used to assess the abundance of aquatic biological resources, prepare forecast materials, and substantiate the raw material base of fisheries.
