Observations on water bodies in the Kirov region

Specialists from the Perm branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) have completed observations of water bodies in the Kirov Region (the Vyatka River, floodplain lakes, and the Belokholunitskoye Reservoir). The studies were conducted in May, August, and October of this year.

Set nets, drift nets, and a sled drag were used to collect ichthyological material from the water bodies. The most abundant species in the research catches were sterlet, crucian carp, roach, and bream.

Among the predatory fish caught by recreational fishermen, the most common are pike-perch, pike, asp, and perch, while the nonpredatory species are bream, roach, and sabrefish.

For several years now, the Vyatka River has experienced unfavorable conditions for fish reproduction. Due to the weak and short-term flood, spawning of common species occurs during the receding waters. During the summer and fall, water levels traditionally remain low (0.4-0.5 meters below the long-term average), leading to a reduction in feeding areas. As a result, stocks of many fish species remain low.
