Prospects for expanding fisheries research for sustainable development in Chukotka

At the end of November, a working meeting was held between Vladislav Kuznetsov, Governor of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, and Alexey Baitaluk, Deputy Director and Head of the Pacific Branch of the Russian State Research Center "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO).

The main topic of the meeting was the intensification of the use of a scientific approach to addressing pressing issues of sustainable development in the region.

The Pacific Branch of VNIRO regularly conducts applied environmental and climatological research aimed at providing scientific support for fisheries in both the Far Eastern seas and the Arctic zone.

The working meeting discussed a number of issues aimed at supporting the traditional way of life of the indigenous peoples of Chukotka, which involves salmon fishing, including through artificial reproduction, as well as conducting scientific research in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug to develop aquaculture and the reasons for the decline in Pacific salmon runs to the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.

While discussing the prospects for developing the region's fisheries sector, the participants of the working meeting concluded that it would be beneficial to conclude an agreement between the relevant Department of Agriculture and Food of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and the Institute to expand comprehensive scientific research in the Okrug.

Chukotka is a unique region of the Arctic zone. Its ecosystem and aquatic biological resources require comprehensive study and assessment for conservation and rational use, ensuring sustainable development aimed at improving the well-being of all residents.
