Prospects for the development of fisheries in the Sea of Azov were discussed at an industry meeting in the Rostov Region

On December 2, a meeting on the conservation and restoration of aquatic bioresources in the Sea of Azov basin was held under the chairmanship of Rostov Region Governor Yuri Slyusar. Representatives of the Rostov Region government, the scientific community, and business participated in the event.

The meeting discussed prospects for the development of fisheries in the Sea of Azov. The focus was on the development of industrial fisheries and aquaculture in the Rostov Region.

Arsen Mirzoyan, branch director; Vladimir Belousov, deputy branch director; and Efim Zysyevich Mazyar, advisor to the branch director, represented the Azov-Black Sea branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO).

Arsen Vyacheslavovich presented a report analyzing the current state of aquatic bioresources in the Sea of Azov. He noted that VNIRO is currently the only scientific institution with extensive specialized research (over 80 years) in the Sea of Azov and modern, large-scale, comprehensive monitoring studies.

The accumulated dataset and the ability to utilize digital technologies enabled VNIRO to produce medium-term forecasts under various scenarios. This work formed the basis for the Concept for the Development of the Fisheries Potential of the Sea of Azov to 2040, developed by the branch. These materials were submitted by VNIRO to the Agency for Strategic Initiatives, which accepted them for the development of the Strategy for the Development of the Azov Basin and the Azov Coastal Territories, pursuant to the Instruction of the President of the Russian Federation.

The concept outlines ongoing changes in the raw material base for fisheries in the Sea of Azov. It predicted changes in the primary fishing grounds under the influence of climate change. Today, practice confirms the accuracy of these scientific calculations. Azov anchovy and sprat, despite a certain decline in stocks, remain important in the fishery, but the Azov turbot, mullet, shrimp, and commercial mollusks (rapa whelk) are emerging as new key promising targets for the Azov Sea fishery.

Arsen Mirzoyan also noted the positive dynamics of the recovery of Azov sturgeon stocks and emphasized the possibility of restoring their commercial value if scientific recommendations regarding the level of artificial reproduction of these species and effective fishery conservation measures are followed.

Following the meeting, Yuriy Slyusar instructed a detailed analysis of the current state of aquatic bioresources and the development of a strategy for their conservation and sustainable use. The Governor emphasized the importance of rational and effective management of the region's living potential, which constitutes a significant competitive advantage.

Furthermore, the head of the region emphasized the need to analyze the situation related to illegal fishing on an industrial scale. He emphasized the importance of developing and implementing effective measures to combat poaching.
