Research of aquatic bioresources in Zimnyaya Zolotitsa

In September of this year, the Northern Branch of the Russian State Research Center "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) conducted a study of aquatic bioresources on the Zimnyaya Zolotitsa River (Primorsky District, Arkhangelsk Region).

The aim of the study was to assess spawning and nursery grounds, determine the distribution densities of juvenile Atlantic salmon, clarify the composition of the ichthyofauna, assess the food supply, and develop recommendations for the exploitation of the river's resources.

The study was conducted in two stages and included expeditionary visits to the upper reaches of the river and the lower reaches, reaching the very last riffles where juvenile salmon were observed. Data on size and weight characteristics, sex ratios, and gonad maturity stages of spawners and juvenile salmon were obtained. Biomaterial was collected for genetic analysis of juvenile Atlantic salmon, and recording structures were collected for office age determination of the fish.

The collected data will be used to assess the abundance of aquatic bioresources, prepare forecasts, substantiate the fisheries resource base, and develop measures to regulate fisheries. Based on the data analysis, recommendations will be made for establishing a recreational fishing area for anadromous fish species on the Zimnyaya Zolotitsa River, or for the lack of justification and resources for establishing such an area.
