Research of distribution densities of juvenile Atlantic salmon in the Arkhangelsk region

In September of this year, the Northern Branch of the Russian State Research Center "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) conducted a study of aquatic bioresources on the Letnyaya Zolotitsa River (Primorsky District, Arkhangelsk Region).

The aim of the study was to assess spawning and nursery grounds, determine the distribution densities of juvenile Atlantic salmon, clarify the composition of the ichthyofauna, and conduct hydrobiological studies.

Specialists from the branch conducted test catches to determine the species composition of the fish, determined the areas of spawning and nursery grounds and the distribution densities of juvenile Atlantic salmon, and collected hydrobiological samples. During the study, data were obtained on the size and weight characteristics, sex ratios, and stages of gonadal maturity of juvenile salmon. Biomaterial was collected for genetic analysis of juvenile Atlantic salmon, and recording structures were collected for office age determination of the fish. The catches also included perch, pike, dace, roach, and barbel char.

The collected material will be used to assess the abundance of aquatic bioresources, prepare forecasts, substantiate the fisheries resource base, and develop fisheries regulation measures.
