Research of freshwater reservoirs of the Murmansk region

In October 2025, specialists from the Inland Waters Bioresources Laboratory of the Polar Branch of the Russian State Research Center "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) conducted field research on Lake Lovozero, one of the largest bodies of water in the Murmansk Region.

The work included test fish catches and benthos and water sampling. Preliminary data on the species composition of the lake's ichthyofauna were obtained.

Lovozero is home to whitefish, which makes up the majority of the catch, along with pike, perch, grayling, vendace, burbot, and ruff, as well as occasional brown trout and char. The lake is noted to be a popular fishing destination for domestic and international tourists year-round. Local residents, including representatives of indigenous peoples of the North, also actively fish. The lake is rich in fish, despite significant fishing pressure. Further research will be conducted on the lake.
