Research of pollock and Pacific herring in the North Okhotsk subzone of the Sea of Okhotsk

As part of the annual monitoring of the industrial catch of pollock and Pacific herring in the North Sea of Okhotsk subzone, specialists from the Magadan branch of the Russian State Research Center "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) have begun work on the MTF "Sea Wolf."

From October to December of this year, the long-term monitoring and scientific support of priority species will continue within the North Sea of Okhotsk subzone. The vessel has now begun fishing in the area of the Kashevarov Bank.

Collecting biological and statistical data on common species, as well as conducting biological analyses and mass measurements, is an important part of the research, allowing for the acquisition of objective data on the status of pollock and herring populations.

"Such work is possible with the support of fisheries organizations, which allow us to collect extensive and representative data on common fisheries species," noted Evgeny Metelev, head of the Magadan branch.

The resulting data will be used to forecast total allowable catches of pollock and Pacific herring in the North Okhotsk subzone, as well as to develop recommendations for the rational exploitation of their stocks.
