Restoration of the sterlet population

On July 6, the freshwater fisheries branch of the SSC RF "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) implemented an important environmental protection project at the Ivankovsky reservoir in the Tver region. 25,829 specimens of juvenile sterlet were released into the reservoir — the average weight of each fish was 2.5 grams.

Sterlet is a valuable commercial fish that belongs to the sturgeon family and is listed in the Red Book. Due to a number of factors, from changes in habitat conditions to historical overfishing, its population in natural reservoirs has significantly decreased, and today the species needs systemic support.

The release of juveniles is one of the key tools for restoring sterlet numbers. Such compensatory measures make it possible not only to increase the number of livestock in a particular reservoir, but also to strengthen the genetic diversity of the local population. The basin of the Ivankovo reservoir is an important water area for the implementation of such projects: favorable hydrological conditions and environmental monitoring increase the chances of juveniles for survival and further growth.

VNIRO's work in this area is part of a large—scale effort to preserve rare fish species and maintain the ecological balance of freshwater ecosystems in Russia.
