Results of the appraisal campaign at the NECA "BIOS" of the Volga-Caspian branch of VNIRO

The autumn assessment of the broodstock of sturgeon, common fish, and paddlefish has been completed at the Volga-Caspian Research and Experimental Aquaculture Complex of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO). Most of the sturgeon specimens are kept in the unique scientific facility "VNIRO Bioresource Collection of Aquatic Bioresources."

During the assessment, the fish were sexed and tagged. They were weighed, and their gonad maturity was assessed. The specimens that will participate in the 2026 spawning campaign are housed in tanks in the long-term holding facility; the remaining specimens are being held in wintering ponds for the winter.

An analysis of the maintenance conditions of sturgeon broodstock during the summer period is underway, and the reproductive performance of the spawners is being assessed for participation in the 2026 spawning campaign. Registers of broodstock and assessment reports are being prepared.
