Scientific research in the Bolvan Bay of the Barents Sea

In the summer of 2025, specialists from the Northern Branch of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO) are conducting scientific research in the waters of the Bolvan Bay of the Barents Sea.

The objectives of the field trip include collecting samples of zoo- and phytoplankton, benthos, and conducting control seine and net catches. To date, work has been carried out at 8 monitoring stations in the western, central and eastern parts of the bay.

The catches in the coastal part of the Bolvan Bay waters are dominated by juvenile whitefish species (whitefish and vendace), and in the central part - flounder.

The obtained materials will be used to assess the state of fattening of whitefish and cisco fish species, prepare a scientific justification for the possibility of forming a fishing area, and develop recommendations for preserving whitefish stocks.
