Ten thousand young whitefish were released into the Curonian Lagoon

In the presence of members of the West Baltic Territorial Administration commission and client representatives, the Atlantic Branch of the Russian State Research Center "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) carried out the second release of juvenile whitefish into the Curonian Lagoon this year.

This time, 10,000 fish were grown to a weight of 10 grams and released into the lagoon to compensate for damage caused by the economic activities of the Kaliningrad Meliovodkhoz Administration.

During rearing and prior to release, the morphophysiological and hematological parameters of the whitefish were analyzed to assess their quality and physiological condition.

The fish hatchery, located at the institute's research and experimental base in the village of Lesnoy (Curonian Spit National Park), conducts applied research on the artificial reproduction of aquatic biological resources in the Baltic Sea basin, as well as the Curonian and Kaliningrad (Vistula) Lagoons.

Following renovation of the premises and modernization of the hatchery facilities, the branch's experimental fish hatchery will be able to raise up to 76,000 juvenile whitefish by 2025.

In recent years, the hatchery has successfully conducted a number of projects related to the development of biotechnologies for the reproduction of aquatic biological resources, as well as providing practice-oriented training through collaboration with the KSTU.

Scientific research helps optimize the operation of the experimental fish hatchery, minimize losses of juvenile fish, and improve their quality.
