D. I. Kremenyuk (Rosrybolovstvo) and K. V. Bandurin (AtlantNIRO) delivered welcoming remarks, emphasizing the importance of the seminar for strengthening Russia’s presence in the waters of Antarctica. The work was carried out under the supervision of D. I. Kremenyuk and S. M. Kasatkina, the representative of the Russian Federation in the Scientific Committee of CCAMLR.
At the seminar, they discussed scientific monitoring and inspection of krill and toothfish fisheries, legal issues related to access to Antarctic resources, conservation measures under the auspices of CCAMLR, as well as the outcomes of the 44th CCAMLR session. They held a practical session on the biological analysis of krill and a roundtable discussion on organizing a system for scientific monitoring and support of domestic Antarctic fisheries. Special attention was paid to tagging toothfish on Russian longline vessels.
As part of the anniversary events marking the 100th anniversary of the ship “Kruzenshtern,” reports on joint expeditions were presented, and a tour of the Museum of the World Ocean was organized for the participants.
Following the seminar, 12 specialists received certificates granting them the right to act as scientific observers in the 2026/27 season, and 1 specialist received the right to inspect vessels in the area covered by the CCAMLR Convention. Russia remains the sixth member of CCAMLR with accredited inspectors. The document summarizing the seminar results will be presented at the upcoming session of the Scientific Committee and the CCAMLR Commission.
