Hundreds of scientists and representatives of federal and regional authorities gathered to discuss key areas of development in Southern Russia and develop solutions to overcome man-made, environmental and geopolitical challenges.
Fisheries science played an important role in the discussion. Its interests were represented by the SSC RF "All—Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO). State Secretary, Deputy Director Evgeny Usolov, as well as representatives of the Southern Branch of VNIRO, spoke on behalf of the Institute.
Evgeny Viktorovich made a presentation on "The fisheries potential of the Sea of Azov in the context of natural and anthropogenic transformations." He stressed that over the past decade, the region has accumulated a complex of problems that require systemic solutions. In response to these challenges, the Strategy for the Sustainable Development of the Azov Sea region until 2040 was developed and approved on behalf of the President of Russia. Its key feature is that, for the first time, the inevitability of the transformation of the fishing resource base has been recorded at the system level.
The Deputy Director of VNIRO outlined the main directions of operational measures to develop the fisheries potential of the Sea of Azov. According to him, the region's potential has not disappeared — it has acquired a new quality. Conscious adaptation to salinization, competent management of reproduction of fish resources and re-profiling of fisheries can not only prevent the destruction of the fisheries system, but also open up new economic opportunities for the development of the region.
The congress continued on June 18 in the format of an expert session at the Southern Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Employees of the Southern Branch of VNIRO presented their reports, continuing an in-depth analysis of topical issues of the development of the Azov basin and the Azov region.
