The expedition begins here: The Floating School prepares future researchers of the aquatic environment

Specialists of the Vologda branch of the Scientific Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) have been actively involved in career guidance work with young people for several years.

Russian Russian Geographical Society cooperation with the Vologda Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society (within the framework of the grants "Together in the Russian North" and "Floating School") and the AOU HE "Educational Center — Cadet School "Shipbuilders of the Prionezhye region" named after Hero of Russia Yu. L. Vorobyov" allows for the implementation of comprehensive educational programs in hydrobiology and ichthyology.

From June 12 to 18, the traditional regional profile shift "Floating School" takes place on the basis of the cadet school. The event is aimed at career guidance for schoolchildren in areas related to water issues. About 100 students from the Vologda region and neighboring regions participate in the shift.

The shift program combines scientific, practical and creative modules:

  • rowing boat management training;
  • fundamentals of hydrobiology and ichthyology;
  • diving and freediving skills;
  • mastering the alphabet of the sea and knitting sea knots;
  • choreography and theater classes;
  • control of unmanned aerial vehicles;
  • ice   skating.
As part of the shift, Nikolai Tropin, a senior researcher at the branch, conducted a series of theoretical and practical classes on ichthyology and hydrobiology (June 12-14). The participants studied common species of aquatic organisms in the Vologda region and their ecological features. To consolidate the material, an interactive presentation with a mini‑competition was organized.

The key event was a master class on the methodology of complete biological analysis of fish. The participants mastered practical skills: measuring length and weight, autopsy, sex determination, degree of obesity and intestinal filling. The knowledge gained will be applied in the upcoming expedition "Onega‑Belomorsky Historical Waterway‑2026" (June 29 — July 15, 2026, route: ASUNTS "Vytegra" — Belomorsk — ASUNTS "Vytegra").
