The Imperial Society

By the second half of the 19th century, fishing was under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of State Property.

With the support of the Ministry and on the initiative of the son of the famous Admiral A.S. Greig, Vasily Alekseevich Greig, zoologists K.F. Kessler, O.A. Grimm, and with the active participation of statesman V.I. Veshnyakov, the Russian Society of Fish Farming and Fisheries was established in 1881, which united fish industrialists and fish farmers. The purpose of the society, according to the charter, was to promote the development of fish farming, fishing and other marine and river crafts in the Russian Empire, as well as to conduct related government events.

At the same time, the society was also engaged in research on the effects of oil pollution on fish, the problems of artificial reproduction of sturgeon and the fishing regulation system. To draw attention to the problems of the development of fish farming and fisheries in Russia, it organized fishing exhibitions, congresses and competitions.

After 15 years of tremendous work, in 1896 the Russian Society of Fish Farming and Fisheries received the highest award for public associations - the right to be "Imperial", as it was written in the decree of the emperor: "for zealous activity for the benefit of the domestic fishing industry." This decision was made based on the most comprehensive report of the Minister of Agriculture and State Property, which was published in a weekly magazine published in the Russian Empire from 1894 to 1905 in St. Petersburg: Izvestia of the Ministry of Agriculture and State Property.
