The reservoirs of the Volga-Don Shipping Canal have been replenished with juvenile fish and carp

 

As part of compensatory measures, three reservoirs—Varvarovskoye, Bereslavskoye, and Karpovskoye—were replenished with 282,575 juvenile herbivorous fish and carp.

 

The reservoirs of the Volga-Don Shipping Canal (VDSC) serve a wide range of national economic functions related to navigation, irrigation, recreation, and fisheries. The integrated use of the reservoirs is accompanied by anthropogenic impacts on them. As a result of regular monitoring of the ecological condition of the VDSK reservoirs by branch specialists, a deterioration in the ecological condition of aquatic biological resources' habitats has been identified, caused by extensive overgrowth of higher and submersible aquatic vegetation in shallow waters, as well as massive summer algal blooms.

 

Given this fact, the release of juvenile herbivorous fish (grass amur and silver carp) is recommended as a priority measure to preserve the habitat conditions of aquatic biological resources in the VDSK reservoirs.
