The state of the crayfish population in the Volgograd region

The Srednevolzhsky branch of the SSC RF "All—Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) continues monitoring populations of the river narrow-toed crayfish, a representative of the Decapoda order and the Astacidae family.

The analysis of catches shows that the population in the reservoirs of the Volga‑The Don shipping Channel is represented by individuals of different ages, including older age groups of 14-16 cm in size, and the replenishment of the fishing part is provided by juveniles of 5-9 cm in size.

Based on the data of fishing with crustaceans, experts determine the abundance (specimens / hour per crustacean), the average weight of individuals, and then calculate the total number and biomass of crayfish per unit area and in the entire habitable water area.

Due to the low abundance of the species, industrial fishing of crayfish in the area of responsibility of the branch in the Volgograd region is prohibited. At the same time, the poaching press poses a serious threat to the population: this is evidenced by the annual increase in the number of requests from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Rosrybolovstvo to conduct examinations and issue conclusions in administrative and criminal cases.
