"Your history is a chronicle of heroic Arctic exploration, fundamental discoveries, and tireless service to the interests of the Fatherland. Founded in the harsh year of 1921, Plavmornin laid the foundations of modern oceanography and fisheries science, and its successor, the legendary PINRO, became Russia's reliable scientific outpost in the North. The first Soviet research vessel, Perseus, holds a special place in this annals. Raising its flag, now a symbol of Russian fisheries science, Perseus ushered in an era of systematic exploration of the northern seas. The heroism of the scientists and sailors of those years, who worked in the most difficult ice and storm conditions, laid the foundation for the Russian school of commercial oceanography. The memory of the Perseus, which perished on duty during the Great Patriotic War, continues to inspire new generations of researchers to selfless work for the sake of science," the director of VNIRO noted in his congratulatory address.
