VNIRO and BRIN outline the contours of cooperation in the field of fisheries and aquaculture

On June 17 of this year, an online meeting was held between specialists from the All‑Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) and representatives of the National Agency for Scientific Research and Innovation of Indonesia (BRIN), a food and agriculture research organization. The dialogue has opened up new opportunities for mutually beneficial partnership in the field of fisheries.

The participants exchanged reports on the development of the fisheries sectors in Russia and Indonesia, learned more about the work of relevant institutions and achievements in the field of freshwater and marine aquaculture.

The potential for cooperation turned out to be extensive: the parties considered options for sharing technologies and experience in aquaculture and feed production, as well as the opportunity to send specialists to train qualified personnel in the field of fisheries.

The Indonesian colleagues paid special attention to the modernization of local fish farming, focusing on such species as tilapia, catfish, carp, and gourami. In addition, they have shown a keen interest in joint research projects related to fish health, such as the study of parasites and viruses, the development of vaccination schemes, and more. Another promising area is research in the field of algae cultivation.

Ilya Gerashchenko, Deputy Director of VNIRO, emphasized the high potential for cooperation with BRIN, and Dr. Supono, head of the BRIN Mariculture Research Center, expressed his firm hope for strengthening partnerships.

The meeting resulted in a decision to exchange specific proposals on key areas of cooperation and begin preparing a draft memorandum of cooperation between the two institutions.
