Specialists from the VNIRO Central Institute and the Polar Branch participated in the research: Olga Vilkova, Alexey Labutin and Timofey Mishin.
The Russian Arctic is a little–studied region, modern data and monitoring of the state of aquatic organisms and their habitat in Arctic biocenoses are of great scientific and practical interest.
The purpose of the voyage was to assess the species diversity, patterns of distribution of aquatic organisms, as well as their habitat and food supply in the coastal area of Alexandra Land Island.
VNIRO specialists carried out 6 hydrobiological stations, where work was carried out to measure the depth of the site, the thickness of snow cover and ice; to determine the salinity, temperature and hydrogen index of water in the bottom layer; to measure the level of background radiation; to collect data on phyto- and zooplankton; photo and video recording of aquatic organisms; sampling of seawater for further laboratory ecological and toxicological studies and metabarcoding, as well as monitoring of marine mammals.
Information on the results of the work will be provided after in-house sample processing and decryption of video materials.
