VNIRO has started scientific support of the Gizhiga-Kamchatka herring fishery in the Sea of Okhotsk

Specialized fishing of Pacific herring begins in the West Kamchatka subzone. The permitted period for catching the Gizhiga-Kamchatka herring population from 2025 is set from April 10 to April 30.

During the entire period of herring fishing, Sergey Shershenkov, an observer from the Magadan branch of the SSC RF "All–Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO), chief specialist of the laboratory of the MRPB and MP UBR, will carry out daily observations of the fishing situation, the composition of herring catches and by-catch objects, collecting materials by size, age, weight and sexual characteristics of herring, the rate of its maturation and readiness for spawning, as well as data from trawl catches on other representatives of aquatic biological resources in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk.

The obtained materials will be used in the preparation of forecasts of the total allowable catch of the Gizhiga-Kamchatka herring population of the West Kamchatka subzone, and will also be in demand as part of the development of recommendations for the rational exploitation of its reserves.
