The scientists estimated the abundance and biomass of aquatic biological resources, studied the spatial distribution of Pacific salmon, Far Eastern sardines, Japanese mackerel and other species, as well as the food supply of necton, the structure of water masses and planktonic communities.
The number of Pacific salmon is estimated at more than 380 million specimens (biomass is over 260 thousand tons), and the distribution of pink salmon aggregations is determined. Data on the density, biological state and biomass of mass fish species in the NWT in the summer of 2026 were collected, salmon tissue samples were taken for laboratory analysis of trace elements and biochemical composition, and information was obtained on microplastic contamination of the surface water layer of the NWT.
The results will form the basis for a forecast of the total allowable and recommended catch for future years.
