VNIRO scientists assessed the quality of juvenile salmon at fish hatcheries in the Magadan Region

Throughout 2025, specialists from the Salmon and Aquaculture Laboratory of the Magadan Branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) conducted scientific monitoring aimed at assessing the performance of salmon hatcheries in the Magadan Region.

The research was conducted at the Olskaya EPAB and the Armansky and Yansky hatcheries of the Okhotsk Branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Glavrybvod."

The scientists conducted a comprehensive assessment of the hatchery products, analyzing:

  • reproduction conditions at the hatcheries;
  • the development and biological condition of juvenile salmon;
  • the quality of otolith marking (a method of marking for subsequent accounting) performed at the hatcheries;
  • the survival rates of farmed juvenile pink, chum, and coho salmon.
A total of 15.7 million specimens were released into the base waters of Tauyskaya Bay. Pacific salmon juveniles: 11.75 million pink salmon, 3.73 million chum salmon, and 0.18 million coho salmon fingerlings.

To ensure comparability and verify the reliability of the data, scientists processed a significant volume of samples: 57 egg and larval samples (1,710 specimens), as well as 1,600 reared juveniles and 1,202 spawners that returned to the rivers for spawning.

The obtained data will form the basis for improving hatchery biotechnology. In addition to the above-mentioned work, staff from the Salmon Fish and Aquaculture Laboratory actively participated in the work of the Commission on the Release of Juvenile Pacific Salmon and Whitefish Species (Peled, Whitefish) into Waterways of the Magadan Region.
