VNIRO scientists study the spawning migration of whitefish in the Ob‑The Irtysh basin

Specialists of the Tyumen branch of the Scientific Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) continue to study the spawning migration of whitefish species in the Ob‑The Irtysh basin.

Recently, the expedition group returned from the Shuryshkarsky district of the Yamalo—Nenets Autonomous District - work was carried out in the Gornaya Ob channel. Scientists studied the formation of stocks of aquatic biological resources and their habitat conditions in order to better understand the state of fish populations in the region.

Whitefish became the focus of attention: experts assessed the spawning herd in detail, conducted mass measurements of more than 2,000 fish and performed a biological analysis of over 200 individuals from commercial catches. All the data was carefully recorded in field ichthyological journals, and the structures that make it possible to determine the age of fish were entered into scale books.

An equally important part of the research was the assessment of the habitat and food supply. In the Gornaya Ob Bayou and Lake Shuryshkarsky Sor, scientists have taken hydrochemical and hydrobiological samples — zoobenthos, zooplankton and phytoplankton. Now all the collected materials are being processed in Tyumen laboratories.

The results will help to analyze the species composition, calculate the biomass and abundance of commercial fish, as well as assess its reproductive ability — this is important for the proper management of fish stocks and the conservation of the ecosystem of the basin.
