VNIRO specialists at the Environmental Forum

In June 2026, specialists from the Khabarovsk branch of the Scientific Research Center of the Russian Federation "All—Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) contributed to an important environmental event - the First Harmony Environmental Forum, which was held from June 15 to 18 in the village of Vanino, Khabarovsk Territory.

The forum brought together a wide variety of people interested in nature conservation: scientists, public figures, government officials and heads of the largest stevedoring companies in the Far East. The rich program allowed the participants not only to exchange experiences, but also to contribute to environmental care in practice.

Thus, through the joint efforts of students from the village of Vanino and volunteers from the Khabarovsk Regional branch of the All-Russian Society for Nature Conservation, it was possible to clear the coast of the protected natural area of Toki Island of plastic debris. In addition, the forum guests visited the territory of the specialized Osterra terminal: they got acquainted with modern environmental equipment and learned about the applied environmental technologies. The highlight was also the marine part of the program — access to the waters of Muchke Bay and to Toki Island, where participants were able to personally assess the state of the environment.

Special attention was paid to the round table "Industry and the natural environment: the need for an optimal balance", held on June 17. The branch's specialists presented a number of significant scientific reports. Sergey Kulbachny, Head of the Department of Monitoring and Assessment of Anthropogenic impact on the environment, shared the results of long-term monitoring of the dynamics of the biota of Muchke Bay from 2008 to 2026. Alexander Kharitonov, a leading specialist at the Laboratory of Marine Bioresources, highlighted the history of the study and the current state of zoobenthos in the northwestern part of the Tatar Strait. Alexander Dulenin, a leading researcher at the Methodological and Prognostic Department, spoke about aquatic biological resources and the ecology of the marine areas of the Khabarovsk Territory.

One of the key outcomes of the forum was the support of the initiative of the Port Alliance company to create a system of permanent scientific monitoring of the environment, fauna and flora of Muchke Bay and Toki Island — based on the stevedoring company Osterra. Pacific Ocean Port". By 2035, thanks to the close cooperation of a large infrastructure facility and leading scientific institutions, it is planned to develop a set of practical recommendations. They will help to increase the volume of port activities without compromising biodiversity and ensure the preservation of the necessary water, air and soil quality in the Vaninsky district of the Khabarovsk Territory.

This example of combining the efforts of industry, science and civil society gives real hope that the Far East will be able to move forward along the path of sustainable environmental and socio-cultural development.
