VNIRO specialists have completed monitoring work to assess the status of whitefish populations in the lower reaches of the Yenisei River

In September and October, ichthyologists from the Krasnoyarsk branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) worked on the Yenisei River in the Taimyr, Dolgano-Nenets, and Turukhansk municipal districts of Krasnoyarsk Krai.

During the expeditions, test fishing, hydrobiological sampling, and habitat parameter measurements were conducted. The two field trips yielded scientific data on the populations of Siberian vendace, Arctic omul, whitefish, muksun, nelma, and tugun.

Whitefish monitoring is conducted to conserve and restore aquatic biological resources. Populations of valuable species such as Arctic omul, muksun, and nelma in the Yenisei River are in a depressed state and require special protection and restoration measures.

According to ichthyologists' observations, slight positive dynamics have been observed in the structural and biological parameters of spawning stocks of semi-anadromous whitefish over the past three years. The timing of spawning migrations this year shifted two weeks later than usual due to abnormal weather conditions during the summer and fall period in the region.

The results of the conducted research will be used in the preparation of materials substantiating the total allowable catch and recommended catch volumes of aquatic biological resources for 2027.
