During the research period, data were collected characterizing the biological status, aggregation distribution, and fishing conditions of pollock, herring, and bycatch species from 59 mid-water trawls. In total, fishery statistics from more than 150 trawls will be used for the final analysis and monitoring of this fishery.
"Particular attention was paid to the main fishery species—the North Sea of Okhotsk pollock and Pacific herring. A comprehensive study of these species in the northern Sea of Okhotsk is only possible with the support of fisheries organizations, in particular, VNIRO's long-standing partner in fisheries research, Pacific Fishery Company LLC. Bycatch species from this fishery were also studied, such as flounder and cod species, perch, and squid," noted Evgeny Metelev, head of the Magadan branch.
The obtained data will be used to prepare pollock and herring fishing season forecasts, forecasts of total allowable catches of pollock and Pacific herring in the North Sea of Okhotsk subzone, and to develop recommendations for the sustainable exploitation of these stocks.
