The Azov-Black Sea branch of the State Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) is the only scientific institution that conducts a full range of fisheries research in the Northern Azov region.

In order to promptly make decisions on scientific support for the work of the fisheries sector in the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions, the "North Azov" department was created in the Azov-Black Sea branch of VNIRO, the primary goals and objectives of which are the conservation of aquatic bioresources, conducting scientific research in the field of fisheries, monitoring water bodies in the specified territories, etc.

At this stage, the specialists of the branch in the territories of the Northern Azov region have established interaction with executive authorities of both the federal and regional levels, with municipalities, with the scientific community, with educational institutions, expeditionary work is carried out, inland water bodies (reservoirs) are studied in order to determine their fisheries potential, etc.

Fishing is an important factor in ensuring the country's food security, and the activities of the branch are one of its components. Given the above and the importance of the tasks facing science, as well as the potential of the Azov-Black Sea basin for the extraction of aquatic biological resources, the employees of the Azov-Black Sea branch in the Northern Azov region will provide conditions for assessing their condition and developing industrial fishing.
