Africa – an ocean of opportunities

Today, at the International Fishery Forum, a presentation of the expedition of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) “Africa – an Ocean of Opportunities” was held, the moderator of which was Deputy Director – Head of the Atlantic Branch Konstantin Bandurin.

“The prerequisites for organizing and conducting these studies were laid within the framework of the Russia-Africa Summit, where our President V.V. Putin instructed us to actively develop relations with African countries, which in our case has already been implemented in the form of the African expedition that has begun,” Vasily Sokolov, Deputy Head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, emphasized opening the meeting.
Currently, the main areas of Russian fishing in Africa are the EEZs of Morocco and Mauritania, where the annual catch is about 100 thousand tons. In the previous decade, Russian fishermen annually caught over 200 thousand tons in the Central-Eastern Atlantic (the CEA fishing area, according to the FAO classification). There are real prerequisites for restoring the fishery to previous volumes and even increasing it. Russian catch in other areas along the African coast, including the Indian Ocean, is insignificant.

The large African expedition of VNIRO 2024-2025 will cover vast water areas in the areas of the western African coast from Morocco to Angola, as well as the western part of the Indian Ocean. Of greatest interest are the coastal waters of Northwest Africa. This area is among the most productive in the World Ocean. For this region, as well as other, less explored areas (Southeast Asia and the Western Indian Ocean), estimates of the biomass and abundance of fish and crustaceans will be made, the features of their biology, distribution, stock dynamics, ecosystem characteristics, food supply, etc. will be studied. Counting the number of young fish will help assess the prospects for fishing for Russian fishermen.
