An interesting new species of invaders has been discovered in the Sostinsky lakes of Kalmykia

The Elista Department of the Volga-Caspian Branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) annually monitors aquatic bioresources and the state of the fish habitat in the Sostinsky Lakes of Kalmykia.

The Sostinsky Lakes are a series of reservoirs connected by channels. The hydrological and hydrochemical regimes of the reservoirs completely depend on the amount of water discharged from the Chogray Reservoir. The current state of the lakes is poor due to water shortages - most of them are overgrown, shallow, dried up, and only 3 lakes are healthy - Kirkita, Zamvita, Kharrega. Monitoring of aquatic bioresources and the state of the habitat of aquatic bioresources is carried out in them, and industrial fishing is carried out.

In 2023, during the fishing of the spawning grounds of the Sostinsky lakes, in addition to young fish, shrimp were first noted in the catches of the fry drag in Lake Zamvita. The shrimp catch reached 94 specimens per fishing operation. The linear-weight indicators of the shrimp reach: length 5.1 cm, weight 1.46 grams. This year, the shrimp has spread to other lakes - Kirkita and Kharerga, and an increase in its numbers is observed. The average shrimp catch was 112 specimens per fishing operation. 329 specimens of shrimp were analyzed.

The proportion of females was - 47%, while in June-September, females with eggs were noted among the analyzed individuals. In August, floating larvae appeared in the plankton.

It is interesting that a new species for lakes is intensively integrated into food chains. In 2024, it was already present in the diet of pike perch and perch.

The discovered individuals are morphologically similar to the Japanese shrimp Macrobrachium nipponense, found in 2020 in the lower reaches of the Terek River.
