The research is carried out within the framework of the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco on cooperation in the field of marine fisheries, signed in 2020.
The main purpose of the expedition is to determine the indices of the number of replenishment of the main exploited populations of small pelagic fish species in the Atlantic zone of Morocco, taking into account various environmental conditions.
During the research, accounting trawl surveys will be carried out, data collection will be carried out to study the biological characteristics and size-age composition of small pelagic fish species, the study of hydrometeorological, oceanological, hydrochemical conditions for the formation of increased biological productivity of waters above the shelf and in the oceanic part of the area. Scientists will collect samples to study the qualitative and quantitative species composition of phyto-, zoo-, ichthyoplankton, scientific samples of hydrobionts for specialized scientific departments of the Institute (parasitological and technological research, fauna systematics sector).
Replenishment indices will be calculated for the main commercial fish species developed by the Russian fishing fleet, including European sardine (S. pilchardus), Eastern mackerel (S. colias), European (T. trachurus) and West African (T. trecae) horse mackerel. Biological data will also be collected for all types of by-catch fish.
The research works will cover a significant water area of the Atlantic zone of Morocco from 32 ° 20's.s. (on the traverse of the city of Safi) to the border of the zones of Morocco and Mauritania.
The survey is carried out by a joint Russian-Moroccan scientific group, including specialists from the Atlantic branch of the VNIRO Federal State Budgetary Institution (AtlantNIRO) and the National Institute of Fisheries Research of Morocco.
It is planned to carry out 143 control trawls, about 70 hydrological and about 45 plankton stations.
During the voyage in the area of the Russian fishery, the Atlantniro STM will interact with Russian fishing vessels, informing them about the presence of commercial fish accumulations.
After the completion of the international expedition, a meeting of Russian and Moroccan experts will be held in December 2021 to discuss the results of the survey and to develop further actions to ensure the rational and efficient use of pelagic resources in the Atlantic zone of Morocco.
