"The trans-European expedition has been successfully completed. During the passage, the vessel overcame 5.8 thousand kilometers: 1.5 thousand kilometers through three seas – the Barents, White and Azov and 4.3 thousand kilometers along the inland waterways of the European part of Russia. Scientists participating in the expedition collected extensive material that will help fisheries science to better understand the state of our reservoirs and make more accurate forecasts. All the goals set for the flight were implemented in full and on schedule. The VNIRO team has proved that it can successfully solve problems of any complexity even in a difficult situation," said Kirill Kolonchin, Director of VNIRO, thanking all employees who participated in the implementation of this large-scale project.
The preliminary results of the flight were reported to the participants of the meeting by the head of the flight of NIS "Proteus", senior researcher at the Laboratory of commercial Oceanography of the CEM of the Polar Branch of VNIRO Evgeny Sentyabov. He thanked the management of the Institute, scientists of VNIRO and its branches, the crew of the research vessel "Proteus", as well as everyone who provided technical and informational support for the expedition on shore.
The geography of the expedition covered the waters of the Barents and White Seas, the water bodies of the White Sea-Baltic Canal, Lake Onega, the Volga River basin. At the final stage, a comprehensive monitoring of the state of aquatic biological resources along the lower reaches of the Don River was carried out, as well as a wide range of studies were carried out in the waters of the Sea of Azov. Scientists have completed 104 research stations. Extensive data were collected on hydrochemical parameters of water, including the content of oxygen and biogenic elements.
At the moment, all the materials collected during the flight of the NIS "Proteus" are at the stage of processing and analysis in the scientific laboratories of VNIRO and its branches. The research vessel "Proteus" has joined the scientific fleet of the Azov-Black Sea branch of VNIRO, where it will be involved in carrying out strategically important expeditionary work aimed at the rational exploitation of the resource base of the southern seas of Russia.
