Branch science contributes to the protection of the biosphere from anthropogenic impact

Immediately after receiving information about the oil spill as a result of the collision of two tankers on the Lena River in the Irkutsk region, scientists from the Baikal branch of VNIRO went to the accident site for a detailed ecological diagnosis of the state of the aquatic ecosystem.
The scientists carried out comprehensive studies on a 130 km long stretch of the river - from Kirensk to the mouth of the Chaya River.

Samples of zooplankton and zoobenthos were taken at 7 points: background, located at a distance of 1 km above the accident site, at the site of the oil spill, as well as at points at a distance of 3, 10, 20, 50 and 75 km below the accident site. In parallel, methods of visual monitoring of the environment were applied. At this stage, the analysis of selected hydrobiological samples is carried out in the laboratories of BaikalNIRO.

VNIRO scientists express their gratitude for the assistance to the state inspectors of the Kirensky section of the Bratsk Interdistrict Department of Control, Supervision and Fish Protection of the Angara-Baikal Territorial Administration of Rosrybolovstvo.
