Coastal studies of anadromous fishes

In June of this year, specialists from the Laboratory of Inland Water Bioresources of the Polar Branch of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO) monitored the state of aquatic biological resources and studied the migration of anadromous fish species in the coastal waters of the Barents Sea off the Murmansk coast.

They collected information on the timing and dynamics of migrations of Atlantic salmon and pink salmon producers, samples for genetic analysis, and information on their occurrence in the natural habitat.

The scientists noted that pink salmon producers were not encountered in Ura Bay during the period of the work. This indirectly indicates that the approaches of this fish to the rivers of the Murmansk Region are lower than the predicted values.

The dynamics of migrations of Atlantic salmon producers did not differ from previous years in general, but the bulk of the fish that migrated off the Murmansk coast in the second half of June were 1-year-old sea-going (1SW) producers.

During their sea migrations, salmon are exposed to a variety of risks, including anthropogenic factors – industrial fishing in coastal areas, bycatch in other fisheries, economic activities along the routes and during spawning migrations, so understanding the migrations of Atlantic salmon and pink salmon in coastal waters is important for preserving these valuable fish.
