Based on the analysis of data collected during the complex pelagic trawl survey, scientists will assess the stocks of Pacific salmon, mackerel, Far Eastern sardine (iwashi), and other pelagic species of aquatic organisms, and study the features of their habitat in the South Kuril and North Kuril zones, and the open waters of the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean.
Such work is carried out on a regular basis every year. The information obtained during the expeditions allows industry science to quickly clarify the timing and power of salmon producers' approaches to the main spawning areas, and promptly provide fisheries institutions with relevant information. The success of the salmon fishing season largely depends on its scientific support.
Research on aquatic organisms is aimed at assessing the productivity of generations, stock dynamics, their structure, distribution, and clarifying the characteristics of the conditions under which commercial aggregations are formed.
This expedition includes a third-year student of the FEFU School of the World Ocean (training area - Applied Hydrometeorology). Ekaterina Golubeva went on a voyage as part of the Research Internship project, which is being implemented with the support of the Federal Agency for Fisheries. Its main goals are to help young specialists determine their professional priorities, find their path in science, and replenish the industry's personnel reserve.
The project offers students a unique opportunity: under the guidance of experienced specialists, to test their knowledge in practice, master modern scientific methods and immerse themselves in the world of fisheries science right on board a research vessel.
