Employees of the Azov-Black Sea branch of VNIRO have begun expeditionary research in the middle reaches of the Kuban River

In early October of this year, employees of the Krasnodar department of the Azov-Black Sea branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) began conducting a two-week expeditionary research to study the state of aquatic biological resources and their habitat in the middle reaches of the Kuban River.

During the field work that has started, it is planned to study the species composition and distribution of aquatic biological resources, establish the presence of habitats for anadromous and semi-anadromous fish species, collect hydrobiological (phytoplankton, zooplankton, zoobenthos) samples and water and soil samples to assess the state of the fish food supply and their habitat.

The research will be conducted in the Krasnodar Reservoir and upstream of the Kuban River to the city of Kropotkin. Fixed and drift gill nets, a fry drag, depth gauges, oximeters and other modern scientific equipment will be used to carry out the expeditionary work.

As the head of the expedition, head of the Azov estuary sector V.I. Petrashov, noted: “During the work, for the first time in the last decade, up-to-date data will be obtained on the role of the middle reaches of the Kuban River as a feeding and reproduction site for valuable migratory fish species in the Azov Sea basin.”
