Evaluation of the spawning run of Siberian vendace in Yamal

Specialists from the fisheries ecology laboratory of the Tyumen branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) are completing research on the Shchuchya River in the Priuralsky District of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.

Scientists are assessing the biological parameters of the spawning stock of Siberian vendace. They are conducting mass measurements and biological analysis - determining the age, length, weight, sex of individuals, fat content coefficient and readiness of fish for spawning. The analysis is carried out from commercial catches.

The Shchuchya River is one of the breeding centers of the Siberian vendace in Yamal, which is the most numerous representative of whitefish in the river basin. In the Shchuchya, broad whitefish, peled and whitefish also breed.

The Siberian vendace is a typical semi-anadromous fish. Despite its small size, it is the most important commercial fish in the polar part of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, as well as an object of amateur and sport fishing. The directions of migration and seasonal movements of this species of whitefish have been well studied: the main breeding centers have been discovered, wintering areas and main feeding areas have been established, and the dynamics of changes in the biological characteristics of the producers have been obtained. Vendace makes long spawning migrations of up to 300 km along the Shchuchya River, overcoming rapids and riffles. In the fall, it lays eggs on riffles and small pebbles. Spawning for this species lasts throughout September.

Fishery research is carried out as part of state monitoring. Specialists from the Tyumen branch of VNIRO not only assess the state of aquatic biological resources, but also collect hydrobiological and hydrochemical samples to assess the environmental parameters on the Shchuchya River.

The data obtained after a complete analysis will form the basis for recommendations for the permissible catch of vendace in 2026.
