Fisheries science has studied the structure of fattening stocks of Baikal omul

Due to the current ban on fishing and the absence of commercial catches of Baikal omul, starting in 2021, the collection of ichthyological material is carried out, including through control seine catches.

The work is carried out in the main fishing areas of the lake (Selenginsky, Barguzinsky and Severobaikalsky) and includes mass measurements with biological analysis. The collected material should reflect the ratio of morpho-ecological groups of Baikal omul, their size and age structure in different areas of Lake Baikal, and maturation.

Part of the catches was studied, after taking a sample, the remaining fish were released back into the reservoir alive. The distribution of morpho-ecological groups in the catches did not change: in the Severobaikalsky and Barguzinsky districts, coastal omul predominated. In Selenginsky - a mixture of all three groups of omul (coastal, deep-water and pelagic). The collected material is being processed.

Currently, with the warming of the water in shallow waters, the fattening omul has moved to open areas of Lake Baikal, and spawning omul has begun to concentrate near the mouths of rivers, in connection with which the operation "Putina" has been launched in the Republic of Buryatia, carried out by law enforcement agencies.

Employees of the Baikal branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) are preparing for scientific support of the spawning migration.
