Fisheries science monitors spawning migration of Baikal omul

Field teams of the Baikal branch of the State Research Center of the Russian Federation, the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO), have begun work on the omul spawning rivers of Lake Baikal - Selenga, Barguzin, as well as small rivers in the southern part of the lake. The expedition group flew to Northern Baikal, where spawning omul is expected to enter the Upper Angara and Kichera rivers.

The spawning migration of 2024 is the seventh in a row, taking place under the conditions of a ban on industrial fishing of the Baikal endemic. The branch employees are assessing the number and structure of spawning stocks - racial, size, age, sex, and also determining the population fecundity of omul of various morpho-ecological groups.

The first omul producers appeared in the Selenga River in the last days of August, since September 5 a low-intensity course has been observed. No mass migration of fish was observed, which is consistent with the forecast for a decrease in the number of mature fish in the Selenga population. Unlike the previous spawning season, younger age groups of omul appeared in the catches, i.e. the next, more numerous generation is beginning to spawn.

In the Barguzin River, as of mid-September, a single entry of producers is observed. A similar situation is on the rivers of southern Baikal (Bolshaya Rechka and Kultushnaya) - here, too, the entry of producers is just beginning.
