Large-scale study by VNIRO

The Department of Molecular Genetics conducted a large-scale study of the genetic component of a rare sturgeon species, the sturgeon Acipenser nudiventris. The study used 275 sturgeon samples collected from 2000 to the present and stored in the UNI "Bioresource Collection of VBR" of the Russian State Research Center "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO).

All sturgeon populations are currently on the verge of extinction. Only immediate efforts to artificially reproduce this species can prevent the complete disappearance of this unique fish.

The work confirmed that the sturgeon population is in a depressed, degraded state, revealed significant genetic differentiation between the Caspian and Aral populations, and showed the potential for creating local broodstock of this species from individuals still currently kept in aquaculture.

Based on the knowledge gained about the genetic structure of the species, it is necessary to begin forming herds of thorn producers of various origins to restore the natural population of this species.
