Opening of a scientific and production complex for growing crustaceans

On May 5, 2025, a scientific and production complex for growing crustaceans was opened at the Vzmorye Aquaculture Research Center of the Azov-Black Sea Branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO). The ceremony was attended by VNIRO Director, Doctor of Economics Kirill Kolonchin, the branch management and invited guests from the Southern Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The scientific and production complex, equipped with a specialized recirculating aquaculture system (RAS), will allow specialists from the Azov-Black Sea branch to grow young shrimp and crayfish, the most promising aquaculture objects, in fully controlled conditions.

The launch of the complex will provide an opportunity for experimental cultivation of crustaceans in order to develop an optimal technological scheme for their cultivation in the conditions of the South of Russia and will significantly contribute to meeting the demand for planting material and commercial products of these valuable objects in the Azov-Black Sea fishery basin.

A special advantage of the complex is its territorial location on the basis of the scientific center of aquaculture "Vzmorye", where it is possible to use methods of combined cultivation of crustaceans both in RAS conditions and with the use of pond areas.

At present, specialists of the Aquaculture Center of the Azov-Black Sea branch of VNIRO are already working on the experimental cultivation of Australian red-clawed and long-clawed crayfish, as well as Rosenberg shrimp. Constant work is being carried out to search for and assess the feasibility of using other promising aquaculture objects.
