Points of growth of fisheries science: on the results of the VNIRO Reporting Session

On February 1-2, a reporting session of the Federal Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography was held in Saratov, where VNIRO scientists presented the results of applied scientific research carried out in 2022.

Opening the meeting, the Director of VNIRO Kirill Kolonchin noted the high importance of practical application of the results of scientific work. "The results of the research conducted by VNIRO scientists not only expand our knowledge about aquatic biological resources, but are also necessary for the development of the fisheries complex of our country. The industry, for the benefit of which hundreds of thousands of Russians work, expects accurate forecasts and competent recommendations from science in our person," Kirill Kolonchin said.

The event was attended by Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Saratov Region - Minister of Agriculture - Roman Kovalsky, Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Saratov Region Konstantin Doronin, Head of the Volga-Kama Territorial Administration of Rosrybolovstvo Vadim Tkachev, Rector of Vavilov University Dmitry Solovyov.

More than 200 scientists of the Central Institute and branches of VNIRO took part in the Reporting session in the VKS mode.

The issues of the session covered a wide range of issues of various profiles: the results of monitoring studies and ecosystem observations, measures to regulate fishing, standardization and new technologies in aquaculture, improvement of methodological and software of branch science, economic research, as well as programs for the conservation of valuable species of aquatic biological resources – these are the key topics of the session, meeting the current trends in the development strategy of the fisheries complex of our country.

One of the most ambitious in terms of the volume of work performed were studies aimed at restoring the number of aquatic biological resources that are experiencing significant anthropogenic stress. As a result, methods for assessing the state of sturgeon stocks were improved, scientific recommendations for the rational exploitation of Pacific salmon stocks were developed, habitat conditions of aquatic biological resources of the Northern and Far Eastern basins were studied, programs for the reaclimatization of the Volga, Oka, Dnieper, and Sukhona rivers were developed.

The work of scientists in the field of development of modern technological solutions is also particularly productive. In addition to verifying production standards and technical requirements for the quality of fish products, VNIRO scientists are engaged in expanding the industrial application of biotechnologies: by processing seaweed, mussels and other aquatic bioresources, VNIRO specialists have created unique prescription compositions, the use of which is in demand both in the food and cosmetology industry.

The forces of science have made serious progress in solving the problem of import substitution of fish feed in the field of aquaculture. Specialists of the Competence Center for Feed and Feeding of the VNIRO Aquaculture facilities have not only developed highly effective formulations based on domestic raw materials, but also conducted their industrial testing at the largest fish-breeding enterprises in Russia. Thanks to VNIRO's cooperation with business representatives, the production of feed for Pacific salmon and trout has already been established, as well as to prepare for the release of a line of production compound feeds for sturgeon and whitefish species.

Over the past year, a very young direction of VNIRO's activity – the cluster of economic research of fisheries - has also demonstrated significant effectiveness. The opening of postgraduate programs in the economic profile ensured the involvement of young talented scientists and created an impulse to search for non-trivial solutions regarding the strategic planning of the Russian fisheries complex.
