Research of Pacific herring spawning on the coast of Olsky district of Magadan region

Every year in May, employees of the Magadan branch of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO) conduct research on the Pacific herring spawning in the Okhotsk Sea coast, including at the model site in the Olskaya Lagoon.

This year, scientists camped for 20 days on the Olskaya Spit, observing the approaches and spawning conditions of the Pacific herring. The first “runners” of spawning herring were observed as early as May 11, and its mass approach was recorded on May 18.

During the entire period, specialists simultaneously conducted work on studying the invertebrates of the Olskaya coast, hydrology and hydrobiology - they measured the physical parameters of the water, took samples of plankton and benthos. After the active spawning of herring was completed, a survey of the Olskaya Lagoon was carried out using consumer-grade unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in order to outline and assess the area where the herring had spawned.

Herring spawning on the coast of the Tauyskaya Bay usually ends by mid-June, so work on monitoring and recording spawning herring will continue until the end of spawning.
