Russian fishery 2024 in the Baltic Sea and its bays

Russian fisheries in the Baltic Sea target such commercial species of aquatic biological resources as cod, Baltic herring (herring), sprat (kilka) and flounder.

Development of the TAC for all types of aquatic biological resources in the Baltic Sea largely depends on the catch volumes in the first and fourth quarters of the year. The fundamental factors for completing a successful fishery and developing the TAC in 2024 are traditionally:

  • weather conditions (availability of fishing aggregations, possibility of going out to sea);
  • the intention of all users to develop quotas;
  • the absence of logistical difficulties for fishing companies associated with the isolation of the Kaliningrad region.
The catch volumes of the main target fish species of the pelagic fishery in the Russian Baltic waters were determined taking into account the daily real fishing situation and the demand for sprat or herring on the market. According to observers of the Atlantic branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO), the sprat stock is below the average long-term value, herring is close to the limit, and cod is below this indicator. The flounder stock is in a stable state.

The stocks of the main commercial species of the Curonian and Kaliningrad (Vistula) Lagoons are generally in a satisfactory condition, which allows for their stable harvesting.

In the current conditions of climate change, the implementation of fisheries in the Baltic should be based on achieving a balance between fishing capacity and the raw material base of the aquatic biological resources available to Russian fisheries. This must be taken into account when making management decisions and planning fishing loads.
